March Portfolio Review – Gold and Emerging Markets in the Doldrums

By Rob Marstrand on April 10, 2013

In general, it’s been a weak month as gold has stayed in the doldrums and many Emerging Market stocks fell (India, Russia and Vietnam being examples of markets that fell).

Of the individual stocks Hess has been doing particularly well on the back of re-structuring plans (selling assets) and hedge fund pressure. Also, Petrobras has taken a tentative turn upwards. Provida continues to go from strength to strength.

Overall, the individual stocks have been holding up well versus emerging market indices in this current period of weakness. The Value Beta Portfolio of ETFs fell back a couple of percent in the month but is still up 9.3% in its first seven months since we added it to the portfolio.
